Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 is an efficient security tool for Microsoft Products, it is simple an invaluable utlity for IT administrators.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (from now on called MBSA) is a tool aimed to help IT administrators determine theirs security status based on Microsoft Security recomendations and offers advice on which actions to follow.

The tool helps to simplify systems security management using its scan tool that will help you eliminate security vulnerabilities and what updates are missing on one or several systems on a network.

On version 2.1 MBSA offers:

Windows Vista y Windows Server 2008 Compatibility
New User Interface
64-bit Support
Provides support for Windows Embedded
Compatible with Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services 2.0 y 3.0, SMS Inventory Tool for Microsoft Update (ITMU), y System Center Configuration Manager 2007.

Microsoft provides two versions for this tool, an x86 (32 bits) standard version and a x64 (64 bit) version.

  • MBSA looks for updated information on internet during scan.
Disadvantages
  • Might use a great amount of system resources during scanning
  • Requires admin rights

This latest version still does not sufficiently differentiate between XP Home and XP Pro. For instance, the Administrator account cannot be removed or renamed in XP Home, yet its presence is flagged as a security weakness.
